ABOUT PROGRAM
Medi8MI is a progressive Peer Mediation Program in Wayne County, MI focused on providing and advocating empowering student leaders, instilling civic responsibility and providing quality conflict resolution instruction to youth. We are a team of certified mediators, experienced educators and passionate advocates. We work with schools to facilitate a progressive response to bully prevention geared toward creating safe and peaceful environments for students, parents, schools and youth program stakeholders.
Peer mediation is both a program and a process where students of the same age-group facilitate resolving disputes between two people or small groups. This process has proven effective in schools around the United States, changing the way students understand and resolve conflict in their lives. Changes include improved self-esteem, listening and critical thinking skills, and school climate for learning. These skills are transferable outside of the classroom.
Medi8MI is a new Peer Mediation program for neighborhood schools and youth-based organizations. This quality program was created by principal mediator, Shimekia Nichols of Choose 2 Talk Mediation Agency which has been providing litigation support, restorative justice and advocacy for alternative dispute resolution services since 2009.
Lesson plans, workbook and activity guides for our Peer Mediation Program will be available as early as September 2013 via schoology.com, a great resource for us to bring our cross core content curriculum to 21st century learners for conflict resolution implementation in the classroom.
The Medi8MI program provides an evidence- based curriculum with interactive lessons, which are horizontally and vertically aligned with the Common Core Content Standards to decrease the disparaging rates of classroom conflict, truancy, in and after school violence, bullying, suspensions and expulsions.
Our goal has been to meet the community-wide challenge for the best idea for engaging and enriching Detroit through needed services and resources. With our program's resources students can:
-
Connect with peers on social and communication issues that are relevant to K-12
-
Find empowerment as student leaders, with skills to negotiate and resolve issues such as bullying,
-
Accept roles and support to become an agent for change and peace within their school
The Medi8MI social media community supports and encourages the exchange of knowledge. Our event, visual surveys and community discussions take just a matter of moments to complete, but leaves a lasting impact with the wealth of knowledge from your answers.
Your ongoing participation is important and provides a chance to share your invaluable expertise and proven practices. Many of the topics we cover are leading edge and will pave the way for more in-depth activism and case study research on strengthening peer mediation program practices across the country and world.
